Congratulations to all the competitors in the 2017 Buller Gorge Marathon – what a fantastic event!
The Buller Gorge Marathon is the biggest weekend in February for Westport with as many as 400 runners and walkers competing in this popular annual event. Described as New Zealand’s most scenic marathon course, the marathon commences at Hawks Crag and heads up the Buller Gorge to Berlin’s Hotel then back along the undulating and scenic Buller Gorge Highway to the finish which is in Victoria Square Westport. The half marathon starts near the Ohika-iti River Bridge and also finishes at Victoria Square.
Accommodation in Westport has been fully booked out for the event months in advance, and it was no different for Omau Settlers Lodge and the other B&B’s and accommodation providers out at Cape Foulwind. The Duty Motel and also the Westport i-Site do a great job of trying to find beds for visitors who unwittingly arrive in town thinking they can get accommodation only to find that there’s nothing available.
Unfortunately a few motels had last minute cancellations, which was frustrating for them, especially when they’d turned potential guests away. It was a good lesson for us; we need to double check that guests haven’t had a change of plan… especially when some book a year or two in advance.
One of our guests from Dubai who ran the full marathon commented…
“It was best marathon I’ve done, the scenery was amazing, there were plenty of drink stations along the way, the atmosphere was great and it was just a really well organised event.”
Big thumbs up all round to the event organisers!
Lee and I managed to get down to Victoria Square mid morning to see some of the half marathoners come in. The atmosphere was great and it was wonderful to see so many people supporting the runners & walkers as they made their way up the main street to cross the finish line.
I’ve been having a bit of trouble with my foot/arch pain since we’ve moved to Westport; I put this down to the fact that I’ve been wearing very flat shoes and jandals… so it was a great opportunity to talk to the experts at the Shoe Clinic while they were in town. Consequently my wallet is somewhat lighter, but my feet are going to love me! Oh and I also couldn’t help but buy a pair of ‘Archies‘ – flip flops with extra arch support – who knew!
All of our guests have re-booked for next year’s marathon… so the take out message from this post is; if you’re planning a stay in Westport on the second weekend of February 2018 (or beyond), book your accommodation early!
